Elastomeric vs. N95 Respirators: Healthcare Workers Weigh In on Comfort and Usability

Advanced Simplicity Exploded Comparison

Although the height of the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us, its lessons continue to shape healthcare practices. One key area of focus is improving respiratory protection for healthcare personnel (HCP). Traditional N95 filtering facepiece respirators, while effective, often faced supply shortages, leading to the exploration of alternatives like elastomeric half-mask respirators (EHMRs). These reusable devices promise durability, improved protection, and sustainability, but how do they compare in comfort and usability?

Elastomeric Advantage TableA study published in Workplace Health & Safety in July 2024, involving 183 HCP across two trauma centers investigated the comfort and practicality of EHMRs during patient care. Participants wore EHMRs for 12 weeks and rated their experiences using the Respirator Comfort, Wearing Experience, and Function Instrument (R-COMFI). The findings reveal promising insights into EHMRs as viable alternatives to N95 respirators.

Participants reported better comfort with EHMRs compared to N95s. Overall R-COMFI scores for EHMRs improved between weeks two and ten, highlighting adaptability with prolonged use. Key benefits included better fit and reduced facial irritation. Many participants felt the EHMRs provided a more secure seal and superior protection, especially in high-risk settings like pandemics.

EHMRs excelled in sustainability. Participants appreciated their reusability, which minimizes waste and ensures a personal, reliable supply during shortages. However, disinfecting and donning EHMRs required additional time, making them less convenient for quick tasks.

Unlike conventional models with multiple components that need to be disassembled and meticulously cleaned, the ElastoMaskPro features a one-piece, single-mold design that is easy to don and disinfect. Its streamlined construction saves valuable time for healthcare workers while maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety.

EHMRs are a viable alternative to N95 masks, particularly in high-demand situations. They offer promising advantages in fit, protection, and environmental sustainability. Further research and innovation will play a key role in solidifying their place in healthcare settings.
